Search Engine Optimization
As soon as people start making a website, they usually start thinking that they want to be "...at the top of the search engine results page! (SERP)"
"The SERP, or Search Engine Results Page, is not a simple thing to manipulate, regardless of what other people or websites say!" is my usual reply.
The SERP cannot be directly manipulated and there are many factors beyond your control. For example, what other people are doing! Likewise there are many factors that you can influence your SERP results with.
Among many factors you should start by considering these...
- Keywords
- Content
- Links
- Titles
- Images
- Meta Tags
The above are not the only factors, but they are a good place to start!
As you delve into this amazing and almost magical world, you will quickly learn of the complexity of Search Engine Optimization! Early on you will need to make some decisions such as...
- Which Search Engine do you want to be ranked highly on? (Google, Yahoo, Ask, and MSN Live all use different placement criteria!)
- What Keywords (Search Engine Input) do you want to result in your page?
- How High is High? Most honest and smart SEO Professionals will want have their site listed in the top 20-30 sites! Old school was the top 10 or even First place, but with advertisers with big budgets taking over the top ten, page two is the new page one, page three is considered good and page one or the top ten, people are expecting advertisers there!
- How much are you willing to pay? Filipina Heart paid hundreds of dollars a month to stay as number one on the SERP for "Filipina" until the Filipina! - The Filipina Campaign at http://filipina.fil.net/ started pushing non dating sites up the SERP! You still can do a lot for free!
Keeping these in mind, let's consider the things that you can change in a quick overview and then on a more in depth page for each thing.
Keywords
Keywords are the individual words that people will type into a search engine when they are looking for a website. These are relevant words or short phrases that are associated and used in the readable text of your website. Consider these...
- 95-98% of people use two or more keywords while searching.
- 75% if people search with at least three keywords.
- How does your webpage relate to your website?
- What are the 20 most important words on your webpage?
- Of the 20 words, what are the 10 most important?
- Of the ten words, what are the real top three?
- Order the top three words by importance, then...
- Order the top three words by Top Priority (not the same as importance!)
- Use your Top Priority keywords in your website 50-100 times.
- More than half the time you use your Top Priority keywords MUST be in readable text (not Headers, Meta Tags or Image Alts or Titles).
Content
Content is the most important thing in getting better page rank. This means making a quality, content rich webpage. By "content rich" I mean that you should consider the following...
- Consider your topic!
- Is your webpage unique?
- Do you follow an Heading Level (h1-h6) Outline?
- Keyword Use!
Titles
Titles are in fact the number one keywords on your webpage that are under your control. There are a number of titles you should consider including the following in order of importance.
- The SEO Page Title
- The Domain Name
- Large Title (in Site Settings)
- The Link (Page Name)
- The Welcome and/or h2 headings
- Image Title, Alt & Href Attributes (see Images below).
Links
Links are called "Search Engine Food!" When another site links to you the linked words drive your search engine higher. Not only other sites but links withing your site also count to a lesser degree. Consider these...
- Links on other sites that use your top three keywords.
- Exchanging links with another good content website!
- Links on your own site that use your top three keywords.
- Paid advertisements on search engines like yahoo.
- Directory Site Listings that are human checked.
- Pain Links - these usually use the same cheap, low content websites and usually result in a DECREASE in page ranking.
- Link Exchanges - we are not talking about "exchanging links with another website", we are talking about putting your site on a list with other sites - this usually has a negative effect.
Images
Image Attributes can have major effects on your website. Consider putting your Top Priority Keywords here...
- HREF Attribute in the File Name (separate words with dashes).
- ALT Attribute is required and a good place to put keywords.
- TITLE Attribute will show when you "mouse over" the image.
- Do not repeat yourself or be boring - this will have a negative effect if you said something like "Talisay House Builder" in every place, just because that is your top three keywords! Be creative use adjectives!
Meta Tags
Want to get a top ranking in search engines? No problem! All you need to do is add a few magical "meta tags" to your web pages, and you'll skyrocket to the top of the listings.
If only it were so easy. Let's make it clear:
- Meta tags are not a magic solution.
- Meta tags are not a magic bullet.
- There is no such thing as a meta tags silver bullet that kills all competition for the SERP Rank!
- Meta tags are not a magic solution.
That being clear, why did we start with the keywords? (That is a very real meta tag!)
Over 80% of all online proceedings start with a search query. You browse to a search engine and you will fill out certain keywords that match what you are looking for. That's why it's so important to put relevant and correct keywords in your meta tags in the source of your webpage.
By organizing your thoughts, and your webpage, with the help and guidance of the meta tags, it will help search engines to index what you have on your webpage and also give the crawlers a little hint as to where you are going! Consider these...
- Title (Not actually a meta tag, but in the HEAD section with them).
- Meta Description
- Meta Keywords
- The Above Three are provided on each Gamot Interface page.
- There are many other meta tags that you may choose to add to your site pages also.
